For the past year I’ve been made fun of, been called names like cheapskate, penny pincher, mr. no fun. Now those same people look at me and say things like, “How do you do it?”, “Where are you getting the extra money?”, “Man, you can’t take it with you. I’m gonna enjoy mine now, not when I’m old and can’t enjoy it”. They sit and complain about gas prices while scratching off their lottery tickets.
Truth is, I’m not making any extra money. My wife and I sit down every month and plan how we are going to spend our money for the next month, instead of sitting down at the end of the month and wondering where our money went. When I mention a budget to my friends, they cringe. They think that a budget means no fun, too restrictive. The exact opposite is true. This past weekend I took my family to the Georgia Aquarium, and my wife and I went to the Melting Pot for our anniversary. We had a lot of FUN by the way. We paid cash for everything, and we still had money left over to put gas in our cars to get to work this week. I’m not bragging, I’m just living proof that frugality and budgeting is the best thing you can do for yourself. And here is the best part, it’s not hard. I always thought it was, but it is very simple to do. The hard part I admit is sticking to it.

It really is amazing how easy it is get “spoiled”. We call it “tightening the belt” around here. We have never really lived outside of our means and we drive used vehicles and keep the payments at $200/mo. We probably have more fun than most families because money is not something we are concerned about.

Living within your means is such a hard concept to grasp these days. Everyone has bought into the “have it today, pay for it later” concept. I did too for a long time, and it got us in a mess. Thankfully that’s all behind us now.
